Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 17 and Sunday; three were involved in traffic accidents.

Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 17 and Sunday; three were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 1,025 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,076 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo and Kona officers arrested 11 motorists in each district, according to police. Puna officers arrested four drivers.

There have been 1,065 major accidents this year compared with 1,017 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, there were 30 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 16 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say six of those fatalities were related to drugs, three to alcohol and six to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
